7 Churches of Revelation Tour Itinerary

  • Day 1: The Suffering Church, The Compromising Church and The Adulterous Church
    • Our Seven Churches of Revelation Tour begins in Izmir, where we will first visit Smyrna, known as “the Suffering Church.”
Here, we reflect on the words from Revelation 2:10: “Do not be afraid of anything that you are going to suffer. Indeed, the devil will throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will face an ordeal for ten days.”
Smyrna is also the home of the great 2nd-century bishop, Polycarp, who was martyred at the age of 85, burned alive for his unwavering faith.
    • Next, we will travel to Pergamum, known as “the Compromising Church.” Revelation 2:12-16 describes this city as “where Satan’s seat is,” referring to the altar of Zeus, a symbol of the city’s deep ties to idolatry.
    • Our final stop is Thyatira, known as “the Adulterous Church,” which, as mentioned in Revelation, tolerated false prophets, including Jezebel (Rev. 2:18-29).
    • After exploring the ruins of Thyatira, we will proeed to Sardes for an overnight stay.
  • Day 2: The Dead Church, The Faithful Church and The Lukewarm Church
    • We begin the day with a visit to Sardis, referred to as “the Dead Church.” In Revelation 3:1-6, Jesus says to the church, “I know thy works, that thou hast a name, that thou livest, and art dead.” Here, we reflect on the church's spiritual decline, appearing alive while being spiritually dead.
    • Our next stop is Philadelphia, known as “the Faithful Church,” which stands as an example of enduring faith.
    • We will also visit Laodicea, the church criticized for being lukewarm—“You are neither cold nor hot” (Rev. 3:15). Laodicea was chastised for its spiritual indifference, as it had become too comfortable, blending pagan practices with Christian beliefs.
    • After exploring this significant site, we will stay overnight in the town of Pamukkale.
  • Day 3: Pamukkale (Hierapolis) and Colossae
    • Today we will explore Pamukkale, famous for its stunning white terraces formed by the thermal waters that have flowed down the mountainside for centuries.
Nearby is Hierapolis, an ancient city known for its vast necropolis, Roman theater, and for being the place where St. Philip was martyred and buried.
    • From Hierapolis, we head to Collossae. Althougg an unexcavated mound, it is a significant biblical site, because the Book of Colossians was adressed to the church here (Col 1:2), and it is also the place where Philemon lived.
    • After the tour, we will proceed to Kusadasi for an overnight stay.
  • Day 4: The Loveless Church, House of the Virgin Mary, and the Church of St. John
    • Today, we will visit Ephesus, known as “the Loveless Church,” the most significant of the seven churches mentioned in Revelation.
In Revelation 2:4, Jesus says, “But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.”
Ephesus was criticized for losing its passion and devotion.
    • We will also explore the House of the Virgin Mary, believed to be the place where she spent her final years.
    • Finally, we will visit the Basilica of St. John, also known as the Church of St. John the Theologian, an important site dedicated to the apostle who is thought to be buried here.

The Spiritual Significance of the 7 Churches of Revelation

The Seven Churches in Turkey are important for both their history and the lessons they offer about the Christian journey.

Each church shows a part of spiritual life and the challenges early Christians faced, giving us lessons that are still relevant today.

  • Ephesus, the “Loveless Church,” reminds us of the struggle to keep a close relationship with Christ while dealing with everyday distractions. Its message is to restore our love for Christ and stay devoted.
  • Smyrna, the “Suffering Church,” teaches us about strength in hard times and the reward for staying faithful. Its message is to keep going through difficulties, knowing that better things are ahead.
  • Pergamum, the “Compromising Church,” warns about mixing faith with wrong beliefs. Its message is to stay true to what we believe, even when it’s hard.
  • Thyatira, the “Adulterous Church,” shows the danger of letting wrong influences into the church. Its message is to turn away from sin and stay pure in our faith.
  • Sardis, the “Dead Church,” warns against just going through the motions of faith without truly living it. Its message is to wake up and live with a real, active faith.
  • Philadelphia, the “Faithful Church,” shows the importance of staying strong in faith. Its message is to keep being faithful, as God has opened the door to his kingdom, the New Jerusalem.
  • Laodicea, the “Lukewarm Church,” warns us: If you are a Christian, live like one. Don’t be hypocritical by calling yourself a Christian while living like a pagan. It calls for a deeper relationship with Christ.

The Seven Churches Tour helps us connect with these messages and think about our own faith and spiritual journey.
